HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SHELL JACKET

Shell jackets are designed to protect you from the elements, relying on waterproof and breathable materials. Proper care helps maintain their water-repellent properties, ensuring maximum durability and performance in harsh conditions.

1. Washing:

  • Machine Wash: Most shell jackets can be machine washed. Use a front-loading washing machine to prevent damage.
  • Cold Water & Gentle Cycle: Wash the jacket on a gentle cycle with cold water to protect the waterproof membrane and seam taping.
  • Mild Detergent: Use a mild, non-detergent soap or a specific cleaner designed for waterproof gear. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach, or stain removers, as these can damage the waterproof finish.

2. Spot Cleaning:

  • For minor stains or dirt, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap instead of washing the entire jacket.

3. Drying:

  • Air Dry: Hang the jacket to air dry. This is the safest method to preserve its waterproof properties.
  • Tumble Dry on Low: If you choose to tumble dry, use the lowest heat setting. This can help reactivate the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating.

4. Restoring Water Repellency:

  • Over time, the DWR coating may wear off. If water no longer beads on the jacket's surface, treat it with a spray-on or wash-in DWR product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.

5. Ironing:

  • Use Low Heat: Some jackets may benefit from low-heat ironing (without steam) to re-activate the DWR coating. Always check the care label and use a cloth between the iron and jacket to avoid damaging the fabric.

6. Storing:

  • Hang Loosely: Avoid storing the jacket in compressed spaces, such as in a stuff sack, for long periods. Hang it in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep Dry: Ensure the jacket is completely dry before storing it to avoid mildew or mold.

7. Avoid:

  • Dry Cleaning: Do not dry clean shell jackets, as the chemicals used can damage waterproof membranes and coatings.
  • High Heat: Never expose the jacket to high heat (from dryers, radiators, or direct sunlight for long periods), as this can degrade the fabric and waterproofing.
  • Harsh Detergents: Strong detergents, bleaches, and fabric softeners can strip the waterproof coating and damage the jacket.

By following these care instructions, you can extend the life and maintain the performance of your shell jacket, ensuring it stays waterproof, windproof, and breathable.
