Caring for your synthetic jacket

How to wash a jacket with synthetic insulation

Synthetic insulation is made to work like down, but handles moisture better – it keeps you warm even when it is damp. A little care keeps it that way.

Washing

  • Machine wash – most synthetic jackets can go in the machine. A front-loader is best; agitators in top-loaders can damage the fabric.
  • Gentle cycle, cold water keeps the insulation from clumping and the fabric from wearing.
  • Mild detergent: use a mild soap or a detergent made for synthetic insulation. No fabric softener – it weakens the water-repellent finish and the breathability.

Spot cleaning

A small stain? Use a damp cloth and a little mild soap instead of washing the whole jacket.

Drying

  • Air dry flat or on a hanger, or tumble dry on low (or no heat). Two clean tennis balls help fluff the insulation.
  • Never use high heat – it damages both the fabric and the insulation.

Water repellency

Over time the DWR coating wears off. When water stops beading on the surface, restore it with a spray-on or wash-in DWR product.

How to reapply DWR

Storing

  • Hang the jacket or keep it loosely in a breathable bag. Long periods in a stuff sack reduce the insulation.
  • Make sure it is completely dry before you put it away.

Avoid

  • Bleach, dry cleaning and harsh chemicals – they break down fabric and insulation.
  • Ironing – the heat can melt synthetic fibres.

Follow these steps and your jacket will keep its warmth and performance for many seasons.
